Annual Red Mass at St. Joseph Cathedral, Downtown Buffalo

Date: Thursday September 16, 2010
Place: St. Joseph Cathedral
Time: 12:05 p.m.
All are invited to attend

Background/History of Red Mass:
The St. Thomas More Guild of Western New York traces its history back to the 13th century with the initiation of the Red Mass. In the Cathedral of Paris in 1245, a Mass was held to invoke the guidance of the Holy Spirit on the judges of the Ecclesiastical Courts. It is believed the first liturgy was celebrated in honor of St. Ives of Brittany, the patron saint of lawyers. The practice of the Red Mass spread to England in 1310 during the reign of King Edward I. The entire Bench and Bar attended this special Eucharist at the beginning of the Spring term of the Court. The name “Red Mass” became a tradition because of the red robes worn by the judges and the red vestments worn by the priests. The Red Mass has been held annually in Westminster Cathedral, London since 1904. The Red Mass has been celebrated in the Diocese of Buffalo over the past century. One of the primary objectives of the St. Thomas More Guild of Western New York is the sponsorship of the Red Mass.

Dear Friends/Colleagues:

As we approach the Kick-Off of another year of WNYPA, Margaret A. Lamonds-Moss and I have been getting geared up for another season of successful pro bono volunteer projects. We ask you to get involved by making suggestions on projects that you feel that would benefit the agency with WNYPA's Pro Bono volunteering.

A few suggestions have been as follows:

Gilda's Club
Adopt A Highway
Kids Escaping Drugs
WNED

The benefits of volunteering are:

Improve your health; meet new people; make a difference in someone's life; communicate to others that you are enthusiastic and care about helping others in the community; and the true value of becoming involved with other members of WNYPA.

Would you please make a difference by contacting Debra L. Smith Kaczmarek at 858-3744 or email me with your suggestions at dkaczmarek@damonmorey.com

Looking forward to hearing from you!!!!
